Shawn’s Kickin’ 07 Tundra Crew – Featured Vehicle

Shawn sent us some photos of his 2007 Tundra CrewMax a few months ago, and somehow they fell off the table. We want to publicly apologize to Shawn for forgetting about this for so long…this truck is cool.

Here’s what Shawn has done to his Tundra:

Terminator 3 Toyota Tundra Special Edition

It is certainly not unusual for companies to produce movie tie-in products in order to help promote a film. Not only is it good marketing to movie fans, but it also capitalizes on the hype that surrounds the movie. What is a bit out of the ordinary is for a car company to make a special edition vehicle for a movie that isn’t about cars whatsoever. The logic behind automobile placements in car movies – such as the “Smokey and the Bandit edition Pontiac Trans Am – is fairly clear, but it takes a real movie buff to spot the connection between the 2003 Terminator 3 Tundra and an unstoppable cyborg.

Ready for the connection? The Tundra pickup truck was featured in a rather lengthy and spectacular car chase in Terminator 3 involving Arnold Schwarzenegger’s killer robot from the future and the Terminator X. While most of the eyes in the theater were probably on the action itself (and/or the TerminatriX), the truck driven by the escaping main characters was a Tundra (buried underneath a homemade cargo box and covered with ten different layers of dust and dirt).

The Tundra takes a real beating during the scene, yet it still manages to whisk the movie’s heroes to safety. The message: Toyota’s dedication to quality and toughness is good enough for “da tear-men-8-tor.”

Todd’s Rogue 2008 Tundra Crew

Here’s a look at Todd’s “Rogue Squadron” 2008 Toyota Tundra Crewmax Limited.

As you can see, it’s a TRD 4×4 with a clean-as-can-be black paint job. We really like the black rims on this truck – it looks great but it’s also a very practical off-road choice – fancy rims are too expensive to risk scuffing up on the trail.

Kudos to Todd for his clever exhaust setup on this truck – he added a set of Flowmaster Super 40 mufflers to the TRD exhaust system. A lot of people don’t think that the standard TRD exhaust is aggressive enough, and Todd’s modification is a simple way to get more sound out of the TRD kit while maintaining the TRD kit’s fit and finish.

Clever Modification – Tundra With A Sequoia Front End

Everyone knows that the 2007+ Tundra and 2008+ Sequoia are both based on the same basic platform. Same engine and transmission options, essentially the same suspension and frame (with some minor but important differences), same interiors (at least from the 2nd row forward), etc. Automakers strive to share parts between vehicles because it keeps costs down with larger economies of scale, and quality is often improved on shared parts because automakers can afford to invest in more engineering and R&D on a part that’s shared by multiple vehicles. But who cares, right? “Show us the featured truck already!”

Since so many parts are shared between the Tundra and Sequoia, it’s fun to mix and match. Everyone has probably seen a Tundra with Sequoia door handles, and some people have modified a chrome Sequoia grill to fit onto their Tundra, but how many people have seen this?

LS6 Tacoma Follow-Up

Remember the 2005 Regular Cab 2wd Tacoma with the Corvette LS6 we mentioned back on March 11th? It’s back from the paint shop.

The completed 05 Tacoma with the Vette motor.

The completed 05 Tacoma with the Vette motor.

We’ve done a little reckoning – here’s what we’re thinking:

  • A stock 2005 Tacoma Reg. Cab 2wd weighs about 3300lbs.
  • A brand new 2009 Tundra Reg. Cab 2wd with the 5.7L weighs about 4900lbs.
  • The horsepower to weight ratio of an 09′ Tundra Reg. Cab 2-by with the 5.7 is 12.8 to 1.
  • The horsepower to weight ratio of this Tacoma is about 7.2 to 1.
  • A stock 09′ Tundra Reg Cab with the 5.7 will run a 14 second quarter mile (give or take).

Anyone want to guess how long this Taco needs to go 1/4 mile?
