Toyota recently announced a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for the 2007-2011 Tundra concerning a condition where the check engine light will show “On.”

Water Intrusion TSB

A TSB has been issued for Tundras with specific DTCs for Check Engine Light malfunctions.

The Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are:

  • P043E
  • P043F
  • P2401
  • P2402
  • P2419

For the following TSB, all five DTC codes must be present.

According to Toyota, “This condition can be caused by water or debris entry into the evaporative control system through the fresh air inlet. To address this condition, the fuel tank fillerpipe has been revised to help prevent water intrusion.”

This TSB applies only to those Tundras that were produced prior to a production change that addressed this issue. Also, your truck needs to be covered by Toyota’s 3-year, 36-month warranty.

The following chart shows the applicable models.

Is this gunna be another recall possibly? if so that would be nice to know before i take my truck in for its next oil change.

  2. Bruce says:

nothing on the 07 tundra 4.7?

  3. mk says:

seems to me this should be covered beyond 3/36K, more like 5/60K.

  4. Mickey says:

Had one check engine light which I forgot to put the gas cap back on. I then took off my locking gas cap and put the original back on and the wife took it in for the check engine light. The dealer replaced my gas cap and no charge for diagnostics. I’m at 125,367 miles now. I don’t think I will have water intrusion. Also what 07 will have less than 36,000 miles? I drive my truck.

  5. Jason (Admin) says:

Josh – No recall, just a TSB.

Bruce – I believe the 4.7 is listed.

mk – Agreed, but Toyota probably won’t do it.

Mickey – Ya the warranty coverage limit is just too low for a TSB like this…but sometimes these TSB’s are just for helping dealership techs spot a problem. Still, if Toyota knows there’s a problem caused by a defect or design error, it would be smart to cover their mistake (or at least a portion).

Of course, that would make Toyota the only manufacturer to do that sort of thing. 😉

  6. Mickey says:

Well Jason then we must be part of something new. I just received my AIP TSB warranty notice which extends the warranty on this system. As per letter this warranty coverage extension for this TSB will extend the coverage to 10 years or 150k miles. The dealer will replace the AIP and ASV under the warranty extension. Well it better happen in less than 25k miles since I’m at 125,500 miles.

  7. Jason (Admin) says:

Mickey – I didn’t know that the AIP special service campaign also covered this problem (which is supposed to be separate, according to the documentation I have). Are you sure that we’re talking about the same thing?

At 80K miles, my AIP system failed. I took the truck in for warranty repair, then at 84K miles, the check engine light came on, again. This time for T-SB-0187-11. The dealership quoted me $1272 to fix this issue. I work for the Jeep Chrysler Dodge and Ram dealer in town, so I have access to certain information here. After readin this, I’ll probably call our Toyota dealer for employee priced parts and repair myself. Or, bypass the CA required emissions B.S. (since I live in MT). One way or another, I’m not payin $1272 to fix this issue.

I recently had this problem and discovered this would cost me 1400 US. unreal for a design error. I love my tundra. but would consider this a rape of the consumer.. I would rather buy government motors corp than pay this again

I think this is crap I have the factory warranty and also an extended 100,000 mile Bumper to Bumper warranty and neither of my warranties cover this. I have the check engine light on and when taken to the local Toyota dealer L & S Toyota in Beckley WV they told me that this was the problem and that neither of my warranties cover this. If Toyota knows this is a wide spread problem then they should fix this free of charge. I asked them what it would cost to get this fixed and they said $860.00. I feel I shouldn’t have to pay this since it wasn’t just natural wear and tear on my vehicle it is a manufacturers default. This has left a bad taste in my mouth with this company I loved Toyota up until this point. I have owned 2 Toyota’s a 2004 Tacoma TRD and it had a recall on the frame well my frame broke and they didn’t want to make it right. I bought a 2010 Tundra TRD and now they want to make me pay for this out of my pocket. I do believe my next truck will be a Chevy or a Ford if Toyota doesn’t make this right. I love their trucks but the customer service after the sell is horrible. As much money as I have payed into this company and they won’t fix this problem. I am disgusted by this. Why do I have a Factory warranty or an extended 100,000 mile BUMPER TO BUMPER warranty if they won’t cover this.

  14. keith says:

I meant tsb. its crap 1485.00
    To fix Toyota’s mistake.

    • Tim Esterdahl says:

      Keith,

That stinks! Ask them about the TSB and if that doesn’t work follow our customer service tips on this site. We have had many, many people get a refund from Toyota directly if your vehicle applies or is a bit outside the window. Don’t give up just yet, it could be covered. You will, unfortunately, need to do some work on your end, but saving 1400 is well worth it.
