New Tundra Air Injection System Bypass Module Available

A new solution is available for Toyota Tundras and Sequoias that have malfunctioning air injection system. Tundra Headquarters first ran an article “Tundra and Sequoia $4000 Air Injection System Problem” in 2010 when the stories of outlandish repair costs to the nonessential system began flooding forums and blogs. While Toyota has since warrantied the air injection system on 2nd generation (2007 and up) Tundras and Sequoias, this warranty isn’t perfect:

  1. There is no warranty for 1st generation Tundras or Sequoias that have this problem
  2. The warranty ends after 10 years or 150k miles

However, a custom module being offered by a TundraSolutions.com member promises to “fix” your air injection system for less than $100.

Air Injection System Bypass Module

This custom module tricks your Tundra or Sequoia into thinking that the air injection system is functioning properly.

Electronically Bypassing The Tundra’s Air Injection System (Hypothetically Speaking)

UPDATE: We have recently become aware of a module that “fixes” this issue. See https://tundraheadquarters.com/2012/10/24/air-injection-system-bypass-module for more details.

If you own a second generation Tundra, something you should be aware of is an apparent design flaw in the Tundra’s air injection system. While the likelihood of having this problem is probably pretty low (most of the dealers we talk to report this as a fairly rare problem), you never know if it could strike your Tundra.

Some trucks are covered under warranty (see the link above for more details), but if your truck has this problem and it’s not covered, you don’t have a lot of options. You can either rebuild the pumps and/or remove and clean the valves yourself, or you can pay your dealer a few thousand bucks to put in new parts…or maybe, hypothetically speaking, you might be to bypass the issue altogether…

Tundra and Sequoia $4000 Air Injection System Problem

UPDATE: As of November 2011 (nearly 18 months after this problem first came to our attention), Toyota has finally announced a special service campaign to cover this repair. You can learn more about Toyota’s Air Injection Pump Extended Warranty Campaign here.

It’s been brought to our attention that many 2007 or 2008 Tundra owners are being asked to replace their truck’s air induction pump assemblies and/or air injection switching valves at a substantial cost. The pumps and/or valves seem to be malfunctioning at about the same time that Toyota’s 3 year/36k mile warranty ends, sometimes at a total cost of more than $4,000. Obviously, this is a major concern for any 2007 and older Tundra owner.
