Install A New Tundra Exhaust System in 27 Minutes

OffRoadWeb.com has a nice quick article that shows how installing an MBRP cat-back exhaust system takes just about 30 minutes (27, to be exact). While this install time assumes that:

  • you have all the tools you need
  • that you know how to use them
  • that you have access to a vehicle lift
  • that the underside of your Tundra is relatively rust and grime-free

it’s still a great illustration of just how easy it can be to install a cat-back after-market exhaust system on your Tundra. Most cat-back exhaust systems are designed to use factory exhaust hangers, which means that install can be really, really simple…especially on a newer truck where there isn’t any rust or grime to deal with.

If you’re thinking about adding a cat-back exhaust system to your Tundra, here are a few ideas to consider:

The MotoIQ Project Tundra

Project trucks are a lot of fun – especially when those putting them together have a budget that is more in sync with that of the average vehicle owner. The folks at MotoIQ, a group of gearheads dedicated to covering the automotive landscape with solid writing and interesting features branched out into the truck segment in 2010 and selected a brand new Toyota Tundra as their next tow vehicle for their stable of track cars. Somewhere along the way, the Tundra became more than just a tire mule – it blossomed into a full-on project worthy of its own continuing series of posts and adventures documenting its evolution from bone-stock to custom rig.

The exact Tundra model chosen was a Double Cab 4×4 with the TRD Rock Warrior package, Heavy Duty cold weather package and of course a towing package. Although the MotoIQ team was very satisfied with the Tundra out of the box, it wasn’t long before they started to customize the truck using TRD parts (chosen because of their warranty-friendly attributes).

Tundra TRD Dual Exhaust Is Back

When the 2nd generation Toyota Tundra debuted in 2007, one of the things Tundra buyers liked was the option to buy a Toyota-authorized TRD cat-back exhaust system. Rather than buying an after-market exhaust system and worrying about performance, sound characteristics, and quality, new Tundra buyers could go with a system backed by Toyota.

However, for some inexplicable reason, Toyota canceled the TRD exhaust system at the end of the 2008 model year. Up until last week, anyone who wanted a TRD exhaust for their 2009-2011 Tundra was out of luck. However, TRD has corrected this oversight with a new Tundra exhaust system for 2009-and-up Tundras.

Tundra Racing – The Nascar Craftsman Truck Series

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck series is notable not only for the high level of professional racing that can be found at each event, but for the fact that it is the first major NASCAR series to have active participation from a foreign automaker. In 2004 Toyota decided to make a big splash in NASCAR by announcing full factory support for a number of Craftsman Truck teams. The company had always played a major role in motorsports worldwide, with a long history in CART, IMA and NHRA import drag racing, but NASCAR had always been regarded as a ‘domestics-only’ club. After trying things out in the Goody’ Dash series for a number of years, Toyota felt it was time to take the plunge and move up to the big leagues.
