The first 16 stages of the 2012 Dakar Rally have been completed. Naturally, the Toyota Tundra team looks strong, though there is a separate Toyota Tacoma team in the running as well. Originally, the rally raid went through Europe and Africa, though due to security threats it has been moved to South America. The race has been aired on the new NBC Sports Channel.

A Toyota Tundra team is racing in the 2012 Dakar Rally going on now.

The term Dakar comes from the name of a city in Senegal that was once the end of the race. Considering the numerous other criticisms and problems that the rally has had over it’s course, the move to South America might be viewed as a way to allow everyone to enjoy the race in a safe manner. The dynamic terrain of the South American landmass should also be enough to please fans, as they thrill at individual drives that have to fight to overcome it.

Toyota also has a few Hiluxes racing in the event on top of their other entries into the race. The truck category actually has at least one commercial big rig in it this year, though that means that it has to overcome the same sort of off road conditions that motorcycles and small automobiles to face. This is quite a novelty, but on the other hand, fans of the Toyota Tundra team will be hoping that their drivers cross the finish line first.

Currently, the race is scheduled to end January 16 in Lima, Peru. That’s where they’ll be waiting for Tundra drivers to overcome the odds and take home the prize, if they’re able to pull it off.

Overall, I would think the tacoma is better suited for off road use simply because of the lighter weight and much shorter wheelbase.

mk – Agreed – Tacoma is a better off-roader. However, a big chunk of this race is just endurance, and that’s where bigger vehicles make up for their off-road deficiencies.
