Toyota Hilux Visit South Pole

We’re all about the Tundra, yes. But sometimes Toyota has too much going on to ignore.

Four of Toyota’s Hilux trucks (the Hilux, sold internationally, is similar to a Tacoma) recently made a trek across Antarctica to the South Pole. Each of the trucks carried researchers and 2.5 tons of supplies. The trip was part of the Omega3 South Pole Race, which commemorates Ronald Amundsen and Robert Scott who explored Antarctica in the early 19th century.

These aren”t your normal Hilux Toyotas. Does anyone else think that looks cold?

Each of the Hilux trucks was modified by Arctic Trucks to handle negative 30 degree Celsius temperatures, extra weight, and other extreme driving conditions. The trucks were also modified to melt snow for water using heat from the Hilux engine.

Would you trust your life to your Toyota? That”s what these people did. Photos courtesy of www.amundsenomega3southpolerace.com.

How’s that for tough?

This isn’t the first time a Hilux has driven across the arctic either. In 2007 the Hilux traveled to the North Pole successfully too.

Built Ford tough. Oops…no…Built Toyota Tough!!

  4. Thanks for the link Ingle – we had that one in the article, but it wasn’t very clear. Why is it bad that they modify Asian vehicles, anyways? They’re the best selling 4×4’s internationally speaking.

  5. Ingle says:

oh sorry, I was referring to people who owns domestic for they cannot get this awesome modification, – yet. =)

  6. Mickey says:

Those trucks are awesome. I heard just the tires were $10,000. So imagine the truck how much.

  7. Ingle – Fair enough. I wouldn’t mind an Artic anything…but an Arctic Tundra would be kick-ass. If only I could afford more than the tires…

  8. FoxMulder says:

Hmmm nice but Top Gear did the same but only a lot more “better” 😛
