AutoTrader.com Most Popular New Vehicle List - Toyota Trucks in top 20

AutoTrader.com has released its top 2013 vehicles list. Both Toyota trucks are in the top 20.

The list is incredibly truck heavy with nearly half of the top 20 vehicles accounting for them. Trucks also took three of the top five spots.

“The full-size truck segment is historically the most popular vehicle segment on our site, but it grew this year to garner more than 20 percent share of shopper interest,” said Isabelle Helms, vice president of Research and Market Intelligence, AutoTrader.com. “We believe this is due to a combination of growth in the housing and construction sectors and the number of models that were all-new for the 2013 and 2014 model years.”

AutoTrader explains their list:

The most popular vehicles are determined by analyzing the number of car shoppers who click on a listing for a new car for sale on AutoTrader.com.  This methodology goes beyond search to illustrate which cars shoppers are actively interested in learning more about, and is reflective of the new vehicles dealers are offering for sale. More than 16 million car shoppers visit AutoTrader.com each month.

The “Most Popular Vehicles on AutoTrader.com for 2013:”

2013 RANK MAKE MODEL YoY RANK
CHANGE
1 Ford F-150 0
2 Jeep Wrangler 1
3 Ram 1500 2
4 Ford Mustang -2
5 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 1
6 Chevrolet Camaro -2
7 Jeep Grand Cherokee 0
8 Ford F-250 2
9 Chevrolet Corvette -1
10 Ram 2500 4
11 Toyota Tacoma 0
12 Dodge Challenger -3
13 GMC Sierra C/K1500 4
14 Honda Accord 6
15 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 -3
16 Ford Fusion 16
17 Toyota Tundra 2
18 Ford F-350 3
19 Dodge Charger -6
20 Ford Focus -4

What got our attention was the Tundra ranking (of course). Moving up two spots with a new pickup that has been largely panned by the critics is pretty impressive. With the lack of changes, you couldn’t fault someone for looking for a “new, exciting” product.

It is also pretty interesting to see the Tacoma holding its ground. With all the new product developments happening in the full-size market, one might expect the Tacoma to lose ground.

Also interesting is Ram 1500 holding off the Chevy Silverado 1500 and inching closer to Ford. The truth is that Ram’s new truck is garnering a LOT of attention thanks to its new features and mpg claims. It has recently won the Motor Trend Truck of the Year Award (first time a truck has won two years in a row) and was named the Truck of Texas. It will be interesting to see how the new diesel offering changes up this list.

It would have been really interesting to see actual “click” numbers to see what the margins for placement were.

This list is really similar to the monthly sales lists that we see. It is our guess that these stats are a pretty good reflection of the market.

What do you think? Anything surprise you?

To me it’s just another tool to help someone in their decision making on what’s “Popular”. This shows what people are buying at the time. Hard to see that only a few cars made this list. F-350 made more sales than a Honda Accord? Not everyone is computer savy and will check in with autotrader.com for research. Some prefer to visit the lot and see in person then get caught into the sale.

AutoTrader is a web site I rarely visit. It just does not bring anything of significance or real value to me.

Clickie Click for “look see” is not the same as actual sales (the no value part). What is more impressive is the Tundra’s growth rate is nearly double that of Ford for October and November 2013. The December figures should be out very soon. It is an interesting market.

the tundra won’t get my business until the 2014 tundra rebate on DC goes up to 1500 bucks is now only 500 bucks.

Pretty much all new designs get a looksie on those sights doesn’t necessarily mean people are buying them.

With multiple configurations and ample ability on- and off-road, the 2013 Toyota Tacoma and toyota tundra remains one of the top choices among midsize trucks.
